The National Museum Cardiff is one of the eight museums and galleries making up the Amgueddfa Cymru, in English, National Museum Wales.

Collections at The National Museum Cardiff include those of archaeology, botany, fine art & applied art, geology and zoology.


Some of the fine art you can see on display at the National Museum Cardiff include -


  • Old Master Paintings

  • Including works by Amico Aspertini, Frans Snyders, Jan van de Cappelle.

  • French Art


  • The National Museum's collection of French art is of international renown. The majority of works in this collection are part of a bequeathment made by Margaret and Gwendoline Davies.

    This collection of French art consists of works by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Auguste Rodin, Honoré Daumier, Jean-François Millet, Claude Monet, Vincent van Gogh, & Paul Cézanne.


     Monet - Waterlilies
    A painting from the well-known Waterlilies series by Claude Monet, on display at the National Museum Cardiff.




  • Art by Notable Welsh Artists

  • Featuring works by -

    Landscape painters Thomas Jones & Richard Wilson.

    Sculptor John Gibson, painters and siblings Augustus John & Gwen John, 20th century Welsh painters Ceri Richards & Kyffin Williams, and artist and poet David Jones.


    The Aran Isles
    The Aran Isles painted by Augustus John likely in the summer of 1912. This painting can be seen at the National Museum Cardiff.


  • 20th Century Art


  • The National Museum Cardiff's collection of 20th century art includes works by sculptors Jacob Epstein, Eric Gill, and Rachel Whiteread.

    Also including works by painters Wynford Dewhurst, L. S. Lowry, Oskar Kokoschka, Stanley Spencer, Lucian Freud, and Frank Auerbach.

    I like the Eric Gill piece

  2. It is a nice piece, Roger Fry said of it "'has anyone ever looked more directly at the real thing and seen its pathetic animalism as Gill has? Merely to have seen what the gesture of pressing the breast with the left hand means, as he has, seems to be a piece of deep imagination."

    I don't know about 'pathetic,' but it is certainly a fine example of living/flesh depicted in stone.
